The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowgirls volleyball team returned to action on Thursday night as they made the drive into northwest Iowa to take on the Braves of Cherokee Washington in Class 3A, Region 2 action at Cherokee Washington High School. The Cowgirls entered at 15-16, while the Braves entered at 27-6 out of the Lakes Conference.
The first set would see the Cowgirls hold their own against the Braves, but Cherokee came out with a 25-16 win. The Braves put together a dominant second set, leading wire-to-wire with a 25-12 victory. CGD would not go down without a fight, battling throughout the 3rd set, but Cherokee would pull away for a 25-17 win and 3-0 sweep of the Cowgirls.
Sydney Friesleben led the Cowgirls with 6 kills and 6 assists, while Ady Askelsen had a team-high 10 assists. Elliot Ennis had 4 kills and 4 blocks on the night as well. Cherokee Washington advances to face MOC-Floyd Valley in the 3A-5 final, while CGD’s season ends at 15-17.
