The Webster City Lynx football team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted longtime NCC-rivals Algona at Lynx Field at Webster City High School. The Lynx entered with a record of 5-2 and 2-1 in the district, while the Bulldogs entered with a similar record of 5-2 and 2-1 in Class 3A, District 2.
From the get out, Webster City was ready to go, forcing an Algona fumble on the Bulldogs first drive, which soon resulted in a Jaxon Cherry 29-yard touchdown run to put the Lynx up 7-0. Webster City would strike again on their ensuing offensive possession, as Keegan Hisler broke loose for a 31-yard touchdown run to put Webster City up 13-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Lynx defense continued to stymie the Bulldogs, and early in the 2nd quarter, Jaxon Cherry punched in his 2nd touchdown from 5 yards out to make it 19-0 Webster City. The Lynx defense would then force another turnover with another recovered fumble on the ensuing drive, before marching inside the 5 and capping the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run by Keegan Hisler to make it 27-0 Lynx. Webster City would score right before halftime on a 5-yard Jaxon Cherry touchdown run to make the halftime score 35-0.
Webster City’s dominance would continue into the 2nd half, as the Lynx took their opening possession of the half down the field, capped off by a Jaxon Cherry 17-yard touchdown run to make it 41-0, before Cael Nixon capped off the night in the 4th quarter with a 2-yard touchdown run to make the final of 47-0.
After missing the Lynx Week 7 game with injury, Jaxon Cherry returned to lineup and carried the ball 25 times for 218 yards and 4 touchdowns, while tallying 9 tackles, 3 tackles for loss and 2 sacks on defense. Keegan Hisler also rushed for 85 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Algona quarterback Alex Manske was limited to 4 passes, completed 0 of them, while rushing for -17 yards on 10 carries.
Webster City wraps up the regular season on Friday night, as they welcome in another longtime NCC rival in the Humboldt Wildcats at 7 PM.
