The Eagle Grove Eagles football team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Pocahontas Area Indians for senior night in Class 1A, District 2 action at Gene Hinrichsen Field in Eagle Grove. The Eagles entered at 0-7 and 0-4 in the district, while Pocahontas Area entered at 3-4 and 2-2 in the district.
Both sides struggled to start, trading punts and turnovers, before Pocahontas Area turned an Eagle Grove fumble into points off a 16-yard touchdown run by Ryan Sommerlot to give the Indians a 6-0 lead. Both sides would trade punts until halftime, with Pocahontas Area clinging to that 6-0 lead. The Indians would hit it big on the opening drive of the 2nd half, with Ryan Sommerlot breaking off runs of 39 yards and 29 yards, en route to punching in a 3-yard touchdown to give the Indians a 12-0 lead. With the rain and the struggles of the Eagles offense, that was enough to give the Indians the 12-0 victory.
Connor Christopher led the Eagles with 96 yards on 11 carries and 6.5 tackles, while Drake Canavan had 57 yards on 29 carries with 6.5 tackles and 4 tackles for loss. Pocahontas Area’s Ryan Sommerlot rushed for 222 yards and 2 touchdowns on 26 carries, while collecting 13.5 tackles as well.
Eagle Grove concludes their 2023 season with a Week 9 game on Friday, as they host Garner-Hayfield-Ventura at Gene Hinrichsen Field in Eagle Grove.
