The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football team returned to action on Friday night, as they took on the Indians of Spirit Lake in Class 2A, District 2 action at the Clarion Football Field at CGD Middle School. The Cowboys entered at 3-4 and 2-2 in the district, while the Indians entered at 6-1 and 4-0 in the district.
Spirit Lake took the football first and had the ball at their own 8-yard line after a botched return. However, that didn’t deter the Indians as junior quarterback Caden Lundt went over the top to Ethan Stecker who caught and ran it 92 yards for a touchdown to put the Indians up 7-0. Diego Gonzalez would start at quarterback for the Cowboys with Carson Nesheim out with injury, and had a tough time moving the football against a stout Indians defense. Spirit Lake would get the football back off a punt, marching down the field and capping the drive off with a Bode Higgins 4-yard touchdown run to put the Indians up 14-0. Spirit Lake would then score on their opening possession of the 2nd quarter as William Ditsworth punched in a 4-yard run to make it 21-0 Spirit Lake at halftime.
Both offense would be stuck in the mud figuratively and literally in the 2nd half, with neither side finding the endzone as Spirit Lake held on for a 21-0 win. Diego Gonzalez went 2-for-4 passing for 14 yards, while rushing for 51 yards on 28 carries with 4 tackles.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows returns to action on Friday, when they travel to Inwood to face #3 West Lyon in Class 2A First Round Playoff action at 7 PM.
