The Webster City Lynx football team is back in action on Friday night, as they make the trip into Floyd County to take on the Charles City Comets in Class 3A, District 2 action at Charles City High School. The Lynx enter with a record of 4-2 and 1-1 in the district, while Charles City enters at 3-3 and 0-2 in the district.
Charles City’s offense has shown signs of major improvement from 2022, led by senior quarterback Jordan Foster, who’s thrown for 658 yards and 9 touchdowns, but has thrown 5 interceptions and is completing just 47.5% of his passes. His favorite target has been senior Keenan Wiley, who’s caught 27 passes for 397 yards and 7 touchdowns. Kayden Kasemeier and Gabe Rogstad have the other receiving touchdowns for the Comets. With the rushing attack, senior Isaiah Roe and sophomore Deacon Caspers have led a resurgent rushing attack, with Roe rushing for 348 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Caspers has run for 334 yards and 2 touchdowns on the season. A big question for the Comets will be how their offensive line holds up against an aggressive Webster City front.
Defensively, the linebacker core has been he heartbeat of this Comets defense, between the foursome of Keegan Bollman, Gabe Rogstad, Jackson Ruzicka and Deacon Caspers. Bollman has 31 tackles, 5 tackles for loss and 2 sacks, Rogstad has 22.5 tackles with 2.5 sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss, Caspers has 29 tackles, a sack and 2 tackles for loss and Ruzicka has a unit-high 35 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 3 sacks. The defensive line will need to rise to the challenge of a physical Webster City offensive line, and will need an uptick in production, as Isaiah Roe leads the defensive line with 15 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.. The secondary is led by safety Josiah Cunnings, who has a team-high 41.5 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and an interceptions. Cunnings also has a kickoff return for a touchdown, while cornerback Micah Hillhouse has 18 tackles with 2 interceptions and a pick six.
Webster City will continue to try and build continuity and balance amongst their 3 main ballcarriers in Jaxon Cherry, Cael Nixon and Keegan Hisler. All 3 cracked the 100-yard mark against Hampton-Dumont-CAL, while the Lynx defense slowed the Bulldogs rushing attack greatly.
Kickoff is slated for 7 PM from Charles City High School, the game can be heard on 92.9/1570 KZWC or online at kqradio.com.
