The Webster City Lynx football team returned to action on Friday night, as they made the trip into Franklin County to take on the Bulldogs of Hampton-Dumont-CAL in Class 3A, District 2 action in Hampton. Webster City entered with a record of 3-2 and 0-1 in district play, while HD-CAL entered at 4-1 and a similar 0-1 district record. Friday’s meeting was the first between the 2 schools since 2011.
Friday matched a pair of teams in need of district wins to keep within the 3A, District 2 title race, and it was Webster City that would get off on the right foot, as the Lynx marched down the field and scored off a Jaxon Cherry touchdown run to put the Lynx up 7-0 early. It would take until the 2nd quarter for Webster City to get back on the board, but Jaxon Cherry barreled in from 11 yards out to make it 14-0 Webster City. It wouldn’t be a long wait for the Lynx to get back in the endzone, as their ensuing offensive drive saw Cherry complete the first half hat trick with his 3rd touchdown run to put Webster City up 21-0. More than halfway through the 2nd quarter, Webster City went to the air as Keegan Hisler found tight end Luke Estlund for a 35-yard touchdown pass to put Webster City up 28-0 at the halftime break.
Both teams defenses would be stiff in the 2nd half, although Hampton-Dumont-CAL did get on the board early in the 4th quarter off a 21-yard touchdown run by running back Brody Walton to cut the score to 28-6, but Webster City’s Cael Nixon would leave no doubt, scoring on a 9-yard touchdown run with 1:47 left to punctuate Webster City’s 35-6 win.
Cael Nixon was the Lynx’s leading rusher, with 138 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries and had a sack on defense. Jaxon Cherry had 15 carries for 110 yards and 3 touchdowns, while also tallying 6.5 tackles, 5 tackles for loss and a sack. Keegan Hisler also ran for 101 yards on 12 carries.
