The Eagle Grove Eagles football team returned to action on Friday night, as they took on the Cougars of Manson-Northwest Webster in Class 1A, District 2 action at the Keith Hart Athletic Complex in Manson. The Eagles entered at 0-4 and 0-1 in the district, while the Cougars entered at 1-3 and 1-0 in the district.
It would be a fast start to the night for the Cougars, as Kamden Birkey got the handoff on the 2nd play of the game, and bolted 45 yards for a Cougars touchdown to make it 6-0. After a stalled Eagle Grove drive, the Cougars went back to the ground and picked up yards in huge Chunks, as fullback Cooper Harman scampered 33 yards for a touchdown to put the Cougars up 12-0. The Eagles would be stopped on downs on the ensuing drive, as M-NW put together a long, sustained drive, capped off by a Logan Moline 19-yard scramble for a touchdown to put the Cougars up 20-0 at the half.
Eagle Grove got the football to start the 2nd half, and put together a solid drive, but efforts were thwarted as a Hayden Schafer pass to the endzone was picked off by Caydin Anderson. M-NW would punt, and following an Eagles turnover on downs, fullback Cooper Harman busted loose for his 2nd touchdown run on the night from 61 yards out, to make it 26-0 Cougars. Eagle Grove would fumble on the ensuing possession, and M-NW turned it into points almost immediately, as sophomore Grayson Klock broke free for a 48-yard touchdown run to make it 33-0. Kamden Birkey would make the final score of the night on a 68-yard touchdown run to bring the final to 39-0.
The Player of the Game was Eagle Grove senior Drake Canavan, who rushed for 66 yards on 22 carries, and tallied 2 tackles for loss and a sack. Eagle Grove dropped to 0-5 with the loss, as the Eagles return home on Friday to host on East Sac County on homecoming.
