The Webster City Lynx football team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Clear Lake Lions in a top-10 showdown at Lynx Field for Webster City’s Class 3A, District 2 opener. Webster City entered at 3-1, while Clear Lake entered a perfect 4-0, as the two renewed their rivalry for the first time since 2017.
A rainy, wet day gave way to a wet, sloppy football game on Friday night, as Webster City would get on the board thanks to a Clear Lake mishap, as mishandled punt by the Lions resulted in Jaxson McIntire running out of the back of the endzone to prevent a Webster City touchdown to give the Lynx a 2-0 lead. A Keegan Hisler pass would be picked off by Sam Dodge on the ensuing drive, and Titan Schmitt took the second play of the drive 54 yards for a touchdown to make it 7-2 Clear Lake. Those would be the only scores for a long while, as defensive stops and turnovers would be numerous throughout the remainder of the game. The game would stay close deep into the 4th quarter, but Webster City failed to convert a 4th and long in their own territory, which resulted in a Kinnick Clabaugh 25-yard field goal with just over 2 minutes to go to make it 10-2 Clear Lake. Webster City’s final drive was stalled as Keegan Hisler was sacked on 4th and long, preserving a 10-2 win for the Lions.
Jaxon Cherry led the Lynx with only 85 yards rushing, but did have another defensive gem with 9.5 tackles, 3 tackles for loss and 2 sacks. Jayden Weinzetl also had 4 tackles with 2 tackles for loss and a sack. Clear Lake’s Titan Schmitt had 155 yards and a touchdown on the ground as well.
Webster City fell to 3-2 with the loss, and returns to action on Friday, when they travel to Hampton to take on Hampton-Dumont-CAL at 7 PM.
