The Eagle Grove Eagles football team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Rebels of Sioux Central at Gene Hinrichsen Field for the Eagles Class 1A, District 2 opener. The Eagles entered with a record of 0-3, while the Rebels entered with a record of 1-2.
The game would be a back-and-forth affair throughout much of it, with the Rebels getting on the board first off a Max Adams 1-yard touchdown run to go up 8-0. Eagle Grove would respond, marching down the field and scoring off a 25-yard touchdown run by Levi Langfitt to cut the score to 8-6. The Eagles defense was able to force an interception on the following drive, but could not muster enough offense before having to punt it back. Sioux Central would march down on the ensuing drive and punch in another touchdown on a 20-yard run by Devyn Wilson to go up 16-6. Eagle Grove would answer quickly, with Connor Christopher taking an option pitch 64 yards down the sideline for a touchdown to make the score 16-14 as the teams headed to the halftime break.
Eagle Grove would get the ball out of the halftime break and march down the field, with Drake Canavan punching in a 3-yard touchdown run to make the score 20-16 Eagles. Sioux Central would answer back quickly, with Max Adams ripping off a 34-yard touchdown run to put the Rebels back on top 22-20. Eagle Grove would have the ball midway through the 4th quarter, when a hurried-Hayden Schafer pass was intercepted and run back for a touchdown by Sioux Central’s Owen Mills to put the Rebels up 29-20. Eagle Grove would turn it over on downs on the following possession, and Sioux Central turned it into points with Max Adams 3rd touchdown of the night to make the score 36-20. Owen Mills and Drake Canavan would combine for two late touchdowns to bring the final score to 44-26 in favor of Sioux Central.
Drake Canavan and Connor Christopher each surpassed 100 yards rushing, Canavan with 116 and 2 touchdowns, Christopher with 112 yards and a touchdown. Eagle Grove returns to action on Friday night, when they travel to Manson to take on Manson-Northwest Webster.
