The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Cardinals of Garner-Hayfield-Ventura in the Cowboys Class 2A, District 2 opener at the Clarion Football Field at CGD Middle School. CGD entered with a record of 1-2, while GHV also entered with a mark of 1-2.
The Cowboys would fumble on their opening possession, but after stifling the Cardinals offense, CGD would march down the field behind Diego Gonzalez’s running, as Gonzalez punched in a 4-yard touchdown run to put the Cowboys up 7-0. The ensuing GHV drive had an Aiden Hawe pass picked off by Colin Kirstein, and two plays later, set up a Carson Nesheim 50-yard pass to Kirstein to put CGD up 14-0. GHV would punt on their ensuing drive, which went out of bounds at the 1-yard line, but in 4 plays, the Cowboys covered all 99 yards, thanks to a Diego Gonzalez 79-yard touchdown run, to put CGD up 21-0. The Cardinals would get on the board before half, thanks to a drive aided by CGD penalties, as Lucas Kral scored from a yard out to make the halftime score 21-6.
The 3rd quarter would be a scoreless one with teams trading punts, but the 4th quarter started great for the Cowboys as Colin Kirstein intercepted his 2nd pass of the night, setting up a drive capped off by a Mason Allen 1-yard touchdown run to make the score 28-6 CGD. Kirstein then struck again, picking off his 3rd pass of the night, which set up Carson Nesheim’s 2nd touchdown pass of the night, this one a 15-yard pass to Diego Gonzalez, putting CGD up 34-6. The Cowboys would get a late touchdown from freshman Charlie Campbell off a 41-yard run to give the final of 41-6 and a CGD win.
Colin Kirsten was the Player of the Game with 3 interceptions and a 50-yard touchdown reception, as Diego Gonzalez had 199 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground, with 16 receiving yards and a touchdown as well. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows returns to action next week, as they travel to Estherville-Lincoln Central.
