The Webster City Lynx football team returned to action on Friday night, as they took on the West Delaware Hawks in their non-district finale at Brown Field in Manchester. Webster City entered with a 3-0 record, while West Delaware entered at 1-2 on the season.
Things started off slow for the Lynx, as they went 3-and-out on the first possession, but on the ensuing punt, West Delaware’s Ryan Hilby returned it 84 yards for a touchdown to put the Hawks up 7-0 in the first quarter. The ensuing drive saw a botched snap curtail the drive, as West Delaware’s offense drove the field behind the play of quarterback Brent Yonkovic, scoring on a 7-yard run to make it 14-0 Hawks. Things continued to stall for Webster City offensively, as another punt gave West Delaware the ball back, and the short field allowed Brent Yonkovic to fire a 22-yard touchdown pass junior Seth Jackson to put the Hawks up 21-0. Things continued to deteriorate for the Lynx with another botched snap dooming the Lynx, as West Delaware punched in another touchdown off a 10-yard Brent Yonkovic run to make the score 28-0 at the halftime break.
West Delaware came out swinging in the 2nd half too, with Yonkovic breaking off a 50-yard touchdown run to put the Hawks up 35-0 in the 3rd quarter. Webster City would get on the board with a Jaxon Cherry 5-yard touchdown to make it 35-7, before a Jax Miller touchdown early in the 4th made it 42-7. Cael Nixon would put up a late 28-yard touchdown run to bring the final score to 42-13.
Jaxon Cherry finished as Webster City’s leading rusher with 104 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, while Cael Nixon had 93 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. West Delaware quarterback Brent Yonkovic went 6-for-12 for 87 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 217 yards and 3 touchdowns on 15 carries.
