The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football team returned to action on Friday night, as they made the trip into southern Webster County, to take on the (2A) #9 Southeast Valley Jaguars in the Cowboys non-district finale. CGD entered with a record of 1-1 with a win over Eagle Grove and a loss to Hampton-Dumont-CAL, while Southeast Valley entered at 2-0 with wins over Manson-Northwest Webster and Eagle Grove.
The game started inauspiciously for both teams, before Clarion got the first big play off a Diego Gonzalez interception returned to inside the 5. Carson Nesheim then snuck it in from 2 yards out to give Clarion a 7-0 lead. Southeast Valley would respond with a touchdown and 2-point conversion to make the score just 8-7 going into halftime. The teams traded scores in the 3rd quarter to make the score 14-14 going into the 4th quarter, but Southeast Valley would find the big plays when they needed, as they came away with a 28-20 win.
Carson Nesheim would go 7-for-21 passing with 84 yards and a touchdown, but did not turn the ball over. The Cowboys got 54 yards on the ground from Diego Gonzalez and and 47 yards from Nesheim, with each player tallying a rushing touchdown too. Colin Kirstein was the recipient of the Nesheim’s touchdown pass from 25 yards out, while Huxley Lingenfelter led the Cowboys in tackles with 8. Dalton Crouse had Southeast Valley’s 2 passing touchdowns, each to senior receiver Jace Hanson, while Jaguars running back Brady Hanson ran for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows returns to action on Friday, when they open Class 2A, District 2 play against Garner-Hayfield-Ventura at CGD Middle School at 7 PM.
