The Webster City Lynx football team followed up their season-opening win with a commanding 34-7 win over Spencer on Friday night, as the Lynx improved to 2-0 on the season. Webster City stayed at #4 in this weeks Radio Iowa poll, and face their toughest test yet as the North Polk Comets, ranked #3 in Class 4A, visit Lynx Field on Friday night. North Polk enters at 2-0 with wins over Bondurant-Farrar and Carlisle.
The last time the Comets visited Hamilton County was on Halloween 2007 when they took on South Hamilton in the Class 1A playoffs. Now? The Comets are taking on the big boys from Hamilton County in Webster City for the first-time ever, and sit in the class above the Lynx. The Comets have been spearheaded by a prolific passing attack through the first 2 weeks, led by senior quarterback Isaac Zoske. Zoske’s thrown for nearly 500 yards, 8 touchdowns and zero interceptions in the first two games, and his favorite target in senior receiver Colton Manock, has caught just 6 passes, but for 208 yards and 3 touchdowns. Fellow senior Kale Yoakum also has 6 catches, for 120 yards and 3 touchdowns as well, to compliment his counterpart in Manock. The rushing game has been a bit of a question mark, only tallying 155 yards through 3 games, with junior BJ Tate having 145 of those yards and all 3 touchdowns.
The strength of the Comets defense to this point has been the linebacking core, with Brayden Foster leading the defense with 18.5 tackles, 2 sacks and 4 tackles for loss in the first two games. Fellow linebacker Cohan Torres also has 17 tackles, a sack, 2.5 tackles for loss and a scoop and score as well. Safety Nathan Feldman has been the top producer in the secondary so far, amassing 16.5 tackles, while cornerback Noah Blomquist has the only interception for the Comets so far. The defensive line has been surprisingly quiet through the first couple weeks, with Carter Van Brocklin the exception with 2 sacks through the first 2 weeks.
Webster City has been the Jaxon Cherry show through the first two weeks, as Cherry has rushed for a class-high 587 yards and 8 touchdowns, averaging 10.7 yards per carry. Defensively, Cherry leads the Lynx in tackles with 14.5 tackles, with 2 sacks and 5 tackles for loss. Cherry spearheads a talented linebacking core for the Lynx, as Jayden Weinzetl has made a name for himself through the first 2 weeks with 10 tackles and 5 tackles for loss. The Lynx secondary hasn’t recorded an interception, but has only allowed 136 passing yards and no touchdowns through the first two games. The North Polk passing attack will be a big test for a secondary that includes Trevyn Lyons, Briar Klaver and Luke Estlund, while the front seven will try to get after Isaac Zoske from the get out.
Kickoff is slated for 7 PM from Lynx Field on Friday night, and can be heard on 92.9/1570 KZWC or online at kqradio.com.
