The Roland-Story Norsemen football team returned to action on Friday night, as they took on a Story County rival in the (3A) #8 Nevada Cubs at Nevada High School. Roland-Story entered at 1-0 after a 40-0 win over South Tama County in Week 1, while Nevada entered at 1-0 after a 31-0 shutout win over West Marshall in Week 1.
From the get out, things would work against the Norsemen, as their first offensive drive ended in a Sam Knoll interception. Just a couple plays later, Anthony Eaton powered his way into the endzone for a 2-yard touchdown run to put Nevada up 7-0. Following a Roland-Story punt, the Cubs went to the air as Jacob Khounsourath took a Connor King screen-pass 34 yards for a touchdown to put Nevada up 14-0 halfway through the first quarter. Roland-Story did have an answer, as the Norsemen went ground and pound, throwing just one pass on their ensuing drive that was capped off by a Hesston Johnson 6-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 14-7. Nevada would answer quickly, off a highlight reel run by Cason Stevenson, which resulted in a 57-yard touchdown run to put the Cubs up 21-7. Stevenson would find pay dirt once again before halftime, scoring on an 11-yard run to put Nevada up 28-7 at the halftime break.
The Cubs would then start off the 2nd half with a bang, with Jacob Khounsourath returning the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to put Nevada up 35-7. Nevada would put the exclamation point up in the 4th quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run to put the Cubs up 42-7, giving them the decisive win.
Hesston Johnson would have 19 carries for 84 yards and a touchdown for Roland-Story, while Cason Stevenson had 22 carries for 189 yards and 2 touchdowns for Nevada. Roland-Story returns to action on Friday, when they host longtime-rivals South Hamilton at Gilbert High School at 7 PM, on 95.7 KQWC and online at kqradio.com.
