The Eagle Grove Eagles football team returned to action on Friday night, as they traveled to Gowrie to take on the Southeast Valley Jaguars in non-district action. The Eagles entered at 0-1 after their 49-6 Week 1 loss to Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, while Southeast Valley entered at 1-0 after their 26-8 Week 1 win over Manson-Northwest Webster.
Southeast Valley would use chunk yardage plays on the opening drive to march into the endzone on a 7-yard touchdown run by Brady Hanson to make the score 6-0 Southeast Valley after the failed 2-point conversion. After an Eagle Grove punt, and consecutive turnovers by the Eagles and Jaguars, Southeast Valley would get into the endzone once more on a 12-yard touchdown run by Brady Hanson to make the score 14-0 Jaguars after the 2-point conversion. Turnovers continued to plague both teams going into the 2nd quarter, before Southeast Valley put together a drive on the ground, which resulted in Brady Hanson’s 3rd touchdown of the half on a 5-yard run to put Southeast Valley up 21-0. The Eagles were forced to punt again, and Southeast Valley used the big play to move quickly down the field as Cale Van Sickle found Ross Larson for a 32-yard touchdown pass to put Southeast Valley up 28-0. Eagle Grove would then try to go into their bag of tricks on the following offensive possession, but Drake Canavan’s jump pass was intercepted by Brady Hanson and returned 46 yards for a touchdown to put the Jaguars up 34-0 at the halftime break.
Eagle Grove would turn it over on downs to start the 2nd half, and Southeast Valley went back to the ground game in the 3rd quarter with Brady Hanson scoring his 5th touchdown on the night on a 5-yard run to put the Jaguars up 40-0. Eagle Grove would finally get on the board in the 3rd quarter, as for the 2nd week in a row Drake Canavan busted a long touchdown, this time for 46 yards as Eagle Grove cut the deficit to 40-6. Southeast Valley would answer immediately as backup quarterback Dalton Crouse launched a 76-yard bomb to Andrew Miller for a touchdown to put Southeast Valley up 47-6. The Jags would get 2 more touchdowns, one on a pass from Crouse to Jace Hanson, another on a Preston Kennedy touchdown run to bring the final score to 59-6.
Drake Canavan would finish with 21 carries for 95 yards and a touchdown for Eagle Grove, while Brady Hanson had 8 carries for 75 yards and 4 touchdowns, along with pick-6 for Southeast Valley. Eagle Grove returns to action on Friday, when they travel to Forest City to take on the Indians in their non-district finale.
