The Webster City Lynx football team returned to action on Friday night, as they made the long road trip to the Iowa Great Lakes Region to take on the Spencer Tigers in non-district action. The Lynx entered with a 1-0 record after a 35-28 win over Fort Dodge, while Spencer entered with an 0-1 record after a 20-3 loss to Humboldt.
Webster City would waste little time in getting on the board, as running back Jaxon Cherry took his 2nd carry of the game 55 yards for a touchdown to give the Lynx a 6-0 lead after the missed PAT. Following a Spencer punt, the Lynx put together a mammoth 93-yard drive that took up over 9 minutes, which was capped off by a Jaxon Cherry 1-yard touchdown run to put Webster City up 14-0 after the 2-point conversion. Spencer would then fumble an option pitch on the ensuing possession, which was recovered by Josh Stansfield, before Jaxon Cherry took the very next play 22 yards for his 3rd touchdown to put Webster City up 21-0 early in the 2nd quarter. Following another Spencer punt, Cherry would break loose again, this time for a 48-yard touchdown run to Webster City up 27-0 after the missed PAT, and gave the Lynx the decisive advantage at halftime.
The 2nd half would be much more bogged down compared to the first half, but Spencer would get on the board with a Cael Bruning 10-yard touchdown run to make it 27-7. Following another Spencer fumble, Jaxon Cherry capped off his monster night with an 18-yard touchdown run to put Webster City up 34-7, as the Lynx would hold on by that final score. Cherry would have 30 carries for 321 yards and 5 touchdowns on the night, averaging 10.7 yards per carry, while also amassing 6.5 tackles, a sack and 2 tackles for loss with a fumble recovery on defense.
Webster City improved to 2-0 with the win, as the 4th-ranked Lynx will return to action on Friday, as they welcome in the (4A) #3 North Polk Comets to Lynx Field. You can hear it on 92.9/1570 KZWC or online at kqradio.com.
