The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys and Eagle Grove Eagles football teams met one another on Thursday night at Gene Hinrichsen Field in Eagle Grove, for the 113th meeting of the annual Wright County Rivalry. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows won last year’s meeting in Clarion by a score of 48-20.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows would be the first to strike, as Eagle Grove’s opening drive stalled, the Cowboys took the lead on a 49-yard touchdown run from Diego Gonzalez to go up 7-0. After the teams traded possessions and turnovers, the Cowboys found the endzone on a crazy sequence that saw the ball stripped from Caleb Seaba, which landed in the hands of Diego Gonzalez, who scampered 11 yards for the touchdown to put CGD up 13-0. Eagle Grove was then driving, before a crucial fumble that was picked up by CGD’s Bryce Lindaman and ran back 49 yards for a touchdown to put the Cowboys up 21-0.
After another Eagle Grove turnover, Selvin Gonzales would take a toss play 13 yards to the near pylon for a touchdown to put CGD up 28-0. However, Eagle Grove would get on the board on the ensuing drive, with fullback Drake Canavan ripping off a 66-yard touchdown run to make the score 28-6. But, on the ensuing kickoff, CGD flipped momentum right back to their side, as Diego Gonzalez ran back the kick 95 yards for a touchdown to give the Cowboys a 35-6 halftime lead.
Action would slow down in the 2nd half, but the Cowboys would put together a sustained drive that ended in a Selvin Gonzalez 3-yard touchdown run to put the Cowboys up 42-6, and a late fumble return for a touchdown by freshman JD Morrical brought the final to 49-6.
Eagle Grove’s Drake Canavan led all rushers with 124 yards and a touchdown, Diego Gonzalez had 75 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground for CGD. Eagle Grove returns to action next Friday when they travel to Southeast Valley, while CGD also returns to action next Friday, when they host Hampton-Dumont-CAL.
