At their meeting this week, the Jewell city council reviewed the sealed bids for a five year recycling contract with the city beginning September 1,2023. Bids were received from The Trashman and American Sanitation. The Trashman had three options. The first one included an 18 gallon bin, weekly pick-up with cost at $4.00 per household. The second option included a 64 gallon EZ cart, weekly pick up and a fee of $4.78 per household. The third option was a 64 gallon EZ cart, with bi weekly pickup and a $4.00 household fee.
As for American Sanitation, their bid allows Jewelll residents to pick from any of their three sizes. They include 35-gallon, 64 gallon and 96-gallon with weekly pick up and a fee of $4.00 per household and a promise of no fuel surcharges for the duration of the contract. After much discussion, the Jewell city council accepted the bid from American Sanitation. Crews from American Sanitation will begin the recycling contract with Jewell residents and businesses for weekly pickup services of refuse on September 1.
In another matter, the Jewell city council met with Jake Dugger of Maguire Iron on maintenance plan options for the Jewell water tower. After reviewing the options the Jewell city council approved a full maintenance plan contract, which would include re-painting every 12 to 15 years and power washes in between paintings as well as inspections and maintenance on the tower itself pending the approval of city attorney Justin Deppe. The cost of the contract would be at $5,000 for the next two years, $68,363 for the following four years and then $21,372 each subsequent year with a potential 5 percent increase. The Jewell city council approved the request.
