The South Hamilton Hawks baseball team returned to action on Wednesday night, as they traveled into Cerro Gordo County to take on the top-ranked team in Class 1A in the Knights of Mason City Newman in Class 1A, District 3 semifinal action. The Hawks entered with a mark of 10-12, while Newman entered with a record of 29-4.
It was a slow, steady climb for the Knight, who took a quick 3-0 lead after the first, and continued to build the lead to 6-0 going into the 6th. Tjerdan Johnson would stop the drought momentarily, hitting his first home run of the year to bring the score to 6-1, but the mighty Newman offense was too much to overcome in a 9-1 defeat.
Newman junior Toby Kesten would have a big night, going 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and 5 RBI on the night. Tjerdan Johnson would drive in the only Hawks run with his solo home run.
South Hamilton’s season comes to an end at 10-13, Mason City Newman will take on Collins-Maxwell for the 1A-3 District Title on Friday night.
