Webster City Police were summoned Thursday evening shortly before 7p..m. to investigate a pickup accident in the city. Reportedly a westbound 1999 Ford F35 pickup truck operated by Gary L. Hammitt of Lehigh was traveling west in the 1100 block of Fairmeadow Drive on to the1200 block when the pickup lost control while negotiating a curve. The Hammitt pickup left the roadway colliding with an electric transformer box causing an explosion and fire prompting the Webster City Fire Department to respond to the scene. The pickup driven by Hammitt continued in a southbound direction where it reentered the roadway,crossing the median and exited the roadway once again on the south side of Fairmeadow Drive.Once out of the roadway again, the pickup continued traveling south where it collided with fence and entered a bean field owned by Travis Wearda of Webster City. The Hammitt pickup then made a north turn reentered the roadway,crossed the median a second time and turned west where it then attempted to flee the scene southward on Beach Street. The pickup was then stopped south of Webster City at 240th Street and Beach. Hammitt escaped injury in the accident. The fire at the transformer caused the disruption of electrical service for a time to residents. The Webster City Line Department responded to repair the damage done to the transformer Thursday night.Damage to the pickup was estimated at $1500. Investigating Webster City Police officer Clint Houge charged Gary L. Hammitt with Driving While License Suspended Thursday night as a result of the accident.
