The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys and St. Edmond Gaels baseball teams got together on Monday night in a special venue, over 2 hours away from either school’s respective parks. That venue was the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, the first-ever high school game played at one of baseball’s greatest cathedral’s.
Much like the old-time baseball game that was played on the field in the 1989 film, the start of the game played out similarly, with CGD getting a 1-0 lead on an RBI double by Wyatt DeCoster in the 2nd inning, and holding that 1-0 lead through the 4th inning. In the 5th, the bats came alive for the Cowboys, as they scored 6 runs in the frame, highlighted by RBI triples from Preston Gardner and Nevan Foss to extend the lead to 7-0.
St. Edmond would get a run back in the 6th to cut it to 7-1, but Nevan Foss brought the lead back to 7 runs with an RBI double in the top of the 7th to make it 8-1 CGD, which would be the final. Carson Nesheim pitched a masterful performance, pitching the complete game, allowing 1 run on 2 hits and striking out 13 batters on the night, a new career-high.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows returns to action on Tuesday night, when they host Rockford.
