The South Hamilton Hawks baseball and softball teams made the trek south into Dallas County on Friday night, to take on the Perry Bluejays in Heart of Iowa Conference action at Perry High School. The Hawks baseball team entered at 4-9, while the Hawks softball team entered at 2-9.
On the baseball diamond, it was a loud start for the Hawks as senior shortstop Landon Skartvedt launched a lead-off home run to give South Hamilton an initial 1-0 lead, as the Hawks would add another run in the frame to lead 2-0. Perry would answer back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the 1st to tie it at 2-2. South Hamilton would then gradually build their lead, adding single runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th to lead 5-2, before Preston Van De Pol blew the door open with a 3-run homer in the 6th, part of a 4-run frame to give the Hawks a 9-2 lead. Perry would add 2 runs in the 6th, and a run in the 7th, but fell by a final of 9-5. Van De Pol and Tjerdan Johnson would each finish with 3 RBI, respectively as the Hawks improved to 5-9.
South Hamilton softball would fall by a final of 14-1 in 5 innings on Friday, as the Hawks initially led 1-0 after the top of the first, but Perry would score 14 unanswered runs en route to the dominating win. Perry senior Lydia Olejniczak would belt a home run in a 2-for-2 day, in which she scored 4 runs.
South Hamilton returns to action on Monday night, as they take on the Greene County Rams in Heart of Iowa Conference action in Jefferson.
