Webster City, Roland-Story compete in Class 2A District Tournament

The Webster City Lynx and Roland-Story Norsemen wrestling teams competed in Class 2A, District 2 wrestling action on Saturday at Webster City High School. The Lynx and Norsemen were joined by Humboldt, Hampton-Dumont-CAL, Greene County, Gilbert, Southeast Valley and Carroll.

Webster City saw a banner day for their top wrestlers, sending 5 to this week’s state tournament in Linden Phetxoumphone (106), Carson Doolittle (120), Austin Mason (170), CJ Hisler (195) and Jaxon Cherry (220). Phetxoumphone clinched the district title by avenging a loss to HD-CAL’s Jayson Stevens from NCC’s, as a late escape by the freshman gave him a 4-3 lead and the win. Carson Doolittle dominated his field at 120 lbs, pinning Southeast Valley’s Caelan Oakes-Sudhish early in the 3rd period to punch his ticket to the Well. At 170 lbs, Austin Mason would win his 2nd place match via injury default over Humboldt’s Landon Halverson, as CJ Hisler won his title match at 195 lbs in eleven seconds over Roland-Story’s Jaxon Kadolph. Finally, Jaxon Cherry would pick up a pin in 43 seconds over Southeast Valley’s Nathan Graves in the 220 lbs championship.

Webster City would also see a handful of third-place finishers as well, with Brayden Henely (132), Luke Estlund (145), Jordan Vankham (152) and Dylan Burnette-Bingham (182). The Lynx would claim the district title, scoring 204 points, with the next closest team in Humboldt with 166 points.

Roland-Story would qualify two wrestlers to this week’s state tournament, with Hesston Johnson winning the district title at 170 lbs, pinning Webster City’s Austin Mason in the championship match, before Jaxon Kadolph fell to Webster City’s CJ Hisler in the 195 lbs title match. Kadolph did not have to wrestle back for 2nd as he had already defeated Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s Masson Evans in the semifinals. Roland-Story would finish 6th with 56 points.
