The Webster City Lynx wrestling team opened postseason action on Tuesday night, as they hosted the Crestwood Cadets in a Class 2A Regional final at Webster City High School. Crestwood defeated the Carroll Tigers earlier in the evening by a final of 48-21 to advance to the regional final against the Lynx.
Webster City’s night opened at 138 lbs, as Tristan Mason was pinned by Crestwood’s Ryan Wilson as the Cadets opened a 6-0 lead, which was then followed by a Cade Korsmo 8-5 decision over Luke Estlund, which put Crestwood up 9-0 after two weights. Webster City would respond with a 9-1 major decision from Jordan Vankham over Ayden Easley to cut the score to 9-4, but a Cole Butikofer tech fall (16-1) over Brady Jessen gave the Cadets a 14-4 lead. That’s all the larger the lead would get for the Cadets, as Austin Mason woke up the Lynx and the home crowd with a pin of Tyler Pisney at 170 lbs to cut the score to 14-10. Brock Voyna would then pick up a 12-1 major decision for Crestwood at 182 lbs over Dylan Burnette-Bingham to build the lead back to 18-10, but back-to-back pins from CJ Hisler and Jaxon Cherry gave Webster City a 22-18 lead.
285 lbs proved to be one of the most entertaining matches of the night, as Drew Jackson of Crestwood bumped up from 220 lbs to face Landon Griffin. In a match that went the distance, a late takedown by Jackson gave him a 7-4 decision to cut the Lynx lead 22-21. As the dual moved to the lightweights, Linden Phetxoumphone kept the crowd on its feet with a 22-second pin over Owen Korsmo to build the Webster City lead to 28-21, however Crestwood would answer with a Mitchell Schmauss pin of Dawson Bertran at 113 lbs to bring it back to 28-27. At 120 lbs, Carson Doolittle would face Carter Schmauss, who bumped up to 113 for the match, and would hold off Doolittle until a toss in the 3rd period put Schmauss on his back and gave Doolittle the pin to give Webster City a 34-27 lead. At 126 lbs, Daniel Schwickerath came up clutch for Crestwood, pinning Adison Scott to make the score 34-33 going into the final bout at 132 lbs.
Brayden Henely would face Kaleb Adams in a tightly-contested match, however Henely would come up limping after the 2nd period but managed to come back for the 3rd period. With 10 seconds left, Henely slid low for a shot and finished with a 2-point takedown to take a 5-3 lead, and would give Webster City the 3-point decision, a 37-33 win, and a spot at the State Duals in Iowa City on Saturday.
