The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows basketball teams made the trip west on Tuesday night, to take on the Gaels of St. Edmond in Fort Dodge in NCC action. The Cowgirls entered with a record of 5-8 and 3-4 in conference play, while the Cowboys entered with a 3-8 record and 1-6 in conference play.
CGD’s girls wasted little time in taking advantage of the struggling Gaels, leading 12-5 after the first quarter, but that lead ballooned to 29-9 at halftime, as the Cowgirls didn’t allow a made field goal until the 2:50 mark of the 2nd quarter. The 3rd quarter would be much of the same, as CGD held a 45-11 lead going into the final frame, before wrapping up a 54-18 win over St. Edmond. Sawyer Morrical was the Jewell Market Player of the Game with a game-high 17 points, while the Gaels were led by Lauren Gibb and Kaili Henning with 4 points each.
The boys game followed and unlike their female counterparts, it was a slow start for Jason Berning’s squad, trailing the Gaels 14-7 after the first quarter and eventually a 22-15 halftime deficit. The 3rd quarter saw the Cowboys offense pick up in a big way, outscoring St. Edmond 20-11 in the frame to take a 35-33 lead into the forth quarter. The Cowboys led by as much as 7, but the Gaels would storm back and a late Jack McElroy free throw sent the game to overtime at 46-46. In overtime, it was the Gaels who found the hot shooting, and it propelled them to a 60-53 win. Nevan Foss was the Jewell Market Player of the Game with 21 points and 10 rebounds, Jackson Palmer had a game-high 24 points for St. Edmond.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows returns to action on Friday, when they host Iowa Falls-Alden in North Central Conference action.
