The Webster City Lynx basketball teams returned to home action on Saturday afternoon, less than 24 hours after their trip to Humboldt, to take on another North Central Conference rival in the Cowboys and Cowgirls of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows. The Lynx girls entered at 2-8 and 1-4 in the conference, while the Lynx boys entered at 6-0 and 3-0 in conference play. CGD’s girls entered at 3-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while the CGD boys entered at 2-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
The girls game opened action, as CGD wasted little time in opening up at 13-4 lead after the first quarter. The 2nd quarter saw action slowed, but the Cowgirls led 21-9 at the halftime break. The 2nd half saw Liz Ennis’s squad pull away for good as they outscored the Lynx 28-13 in the 2nd half en route to a 49-22 victory. Chloe Andersen led the Lynx with 7 points in the game.
Webster City’s boys entered Saturday’s game fresh off their upset win over #4 Humboldt on Friday, and Jason Berning’s Cowboys were primed to pick one off against a emotionally-drained Lynx team. The game proved to be ugly throughout, with Clarion leading just 5-4 after the first quarter. Both sides picked up the slack in the 2nd quarter, with the game knotted at 19 at halftime. The Lynx began to rely on their defense in the 2nd half, leading the Cowboys 29-25 after three, and using that defense to earn a 42-35 win. Carson Nesheim led CGD with 17 points on the night.
Webster City returns to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Gowrie to take on Southeast Valley in a girls/boys doubleheader. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows girls return to action on Monday, when they host (2A) #9 West Fork, the boys return to action on Tuesday when they host Pocahontas Area.
