The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows wrestling team made the trip north and west on Thursday night, to compete in a North Central Conference dual with the Algona Bulldogs at Algona High School. CGD entered with a 6-2 record and 2-0 in the NCC, while Algona entered at 11-1 and 3-1 in the NCC.
The meet started at 106 lbs, where the Cowboys started off with a bang with Ryan Hartwig picking up a 2nd period pin over Algona’s Thomas Zabka. Algona would win the next 5 matches via 3 decisions, a major decision and a tech fall to take an 18-6 lead. Caleb Seaba stopped the bleeding for the Cowboys, picking up a 10-5 decision over Ashton Moreno to bring the score to 18-9. Cale Kirstein and Mack Seaba would then bring the Cowboys all the way back with pins at 152 lbs and 160 lbs to make the score 21-18. Colby Jennings would pin Luke Brownell at 170 lbs to put Algona back on top, before the Cowboys reeled off three straight wins, with pins from Nash Lienemann and Ashtin Willms, as well as a Mason Allen decision, to put CGD up for good at 36-24. Algona would get a major decision at 285 lbs from Cohen Reffer to make the final 36-28.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows returns to action on Saturday, when they travel up into Winnebago County for the Forest City Invitational at Forest City High School.
