Area wrestlers compete in the Jim Kinyon Invitational on Saturday

The Roland-Story Norsemen wrestling team hosted their 50th annual Jim Kinyon Invitational on Saturday at Roland-Story High School in Story City. KQ-area schools South Hamilton and Eagle Grove joined the competition, as well as, Anamosa, East Marshall/GMG, Gilbert, Grinnell, Hampton-Dumont-CAL, Saint Ansgar, Southeast Polk, Southeast Valley and Winterset.

Only one area athlete captured a tournament title, and that was Eagle Grove 113-pounder Mack Morgan. Morgan pinned his way to the final, before picking up a 14-6 major decision over East Marshall/GMG’s Brody Auspurger in the title match. Connor Christopher would claim a runner-up finish at 138 lbs, losing an 11-2 major decision to Winterset’s Keegan Jensen in the final. Hayden Schafer would place 3rd at 132 lbs with a sudden victory over Winterset’s Nile Benge, while Dustin Dawson placed 5th at 145 lbs. Jack Mendoza and Kaden Pritchard’s day would end early due to injury for the Eagles, as they would finish 7th with 109 points.

South Hamilton would see a 3rd place finisher in Keyton Remsburg at 138 lbs, defeating Saint Ansgar’s Aslan Wills in the 3rd place match with a 2nd period fall. Graham Peters would place 5th, defeating Saint Ansgar’s Mikhail Meyer with a quick first period fall. Kolby Hodnefield would place 6th, Braden Young would place 7th and Holden Klein, Bobby Tapper, Jonathan Oneil and Kevin Gonzalez would all place 8th.

Roland-Story’s top placer was also a 3rd place finish, courtesy of 170 lbs wrestler Hesston Johnson. Johnson defeated Southeast Polk’s Noah Trexel in a 7-6 decision that came down to the final 30 seconds. Aaron Peyton would place 4th at 285 lbs, falling in his 3rd place match to Grinnell’s Gene Blalock in a 5-0 decision. Jaxson Kadolph would place 5th at 195 lbs, Hayden Eslick was 6th at 106 lbs, and Thomas Tjaden was 7th at 220 lbs. Both Roland-Story and South Hamilton would score 61 points and tie for 11th place.
