The Webster City Lynx basketball teams made the short trip west on old Highway 20 on Tuesday night, to take on the Gaels of St. Edmond at St. Edmond High School in Fort Dodge. Webster City’s girls entered with an 0-6 record, while Webster City’s boys entered 2-0 and ranked #6 in Class 3A.
The girls game would kick things off, as both Webster City and St. Edmond were looking for win #1 on the season. The first quarter was a defensive slugfest, with the Lynx leading 6-4 at the end of the frame. The offenses picked up in the 2nd quarter, as Webster City extended its lead to 19-16 at halftime. Mark Fisher’s squad kept it close with the Gaels into the 2nd half, leading 28-24 after three, but pulled away in the 4th quarter for a 45-31 win.
Webster City’s boys would follow, looking to keep their record unblemished early in the season. The Lynx offense would start slow, but Jamie Grossoehme would pick up the slack, scoring 20 first half points between long three-pointers and thunderous dunks to give Webster City a 30-18 halftime lead. In the 2nd half, the supporting cast would give the Lynx a huge boost, as Webster City pulled away for a 68-33 win. Grossoehme finished with 28 points, while Ty McKinney finished with 14 points.
Webster City returns to action on Friday, when they host Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in the Legacy Game at old Jefferson Gymnasium at Webster City Middle School.
