Webster City wrestling splits tri dual with Ballard and (3A) #6 Ankeny

The Webster City Lynx wrestling team made the trip south on I-35 on Thursday night into Story County, to compete in a tri dual with the Ballard Bombers and the Ankeny Hawks at Ballard High School. Webster City entered fresh off a 2nd place finish at the DCG Mustang Invitational on Saturday.

Chad Hisler’s squad opened the night against Ankeny, ranked #6 in Class 3A entering, and gave the Hawks all they could handle. Webster City would take 3 of the first 4 bouts, with a Linden Phetxoumphone major decision, a Carson Doolittle fall and a Brayden Henely decision (10-3). Ankeny would pick up 3 falls in a row, before Jordan Vankham stopped the bleeding with a 10-0 major decision at 152 lbs. Brady Jessen and Austin Mason followed with back to back falls, but Ankeny would take 3 of the final 4 matches via fall to claim a 41-35 win. Jaxon Cherry would pin Ankeny’s Will Hinrich’s, but CJ Hisler did not wrestle on Thursday night, with Skyler Scott filling his spot at 195 lbs.

Webster City would follow up with facing off against hosts in the Ballard Bombers, with Linden Phetxoumphone opening things up with a tech fall as he moved up to wrestle at 113 lbs, while Carson Doolittle took a forfeit and Brayden Henely pinned Ballard’s Jac Rhiner. The Bombers would then win 6 of the next 7 bouts, with 3 falls, a major decision and 3 decisions. Jaxon Cherry picked up a huge pin of Henry Christensen at 220 lbs, followed by a Landon Griffin win via forfeit to give Webster City a 38-34 win.

Webster City will return to action on Saturday, when they compete at the Grinnell Tiger Duals at Grinnell High School in Grinnell.
