The Webster City Wrestling team made the drive down Highway 17 into Dallas County on Saturday morning, to compete at the DCG Andy Jacobson Mustang Invitational at Dallas Center-Grimes High School in Grimes. The Lynx were one of 14 teams in attendance, joined by the host Mustangs, Ankeny Centennial, ADM, Carroll, Creston, Des Moines East, Interstate 35, Lewis Central, Nevada, Oskaloosa, PCM and West Marshall.
Webster City saw 3 champions in the tournament: Linden Phetxoumphone at 106 lbs, Carson Doolittle at 120 lbs and CJ Hisler at 195 lbs. Phetxoumphone was competing in his first varsity tournament and picked up his first win over Creston’s Lane Travis via a 17-0 tech fall, as Phetxoumphone won two forfeits in the Lynx’s duals on Thursday. Phetxoumphone would pin West Marshall’s Jack Decker in the semifinals, before squeaking out a 1-0 decision over Ankeny Centennial’s Cael Vandermark in the final.
Carson Doolittle was able to breeze through the 120 lbs bracket, winning 3 of his 4 matches via fall, the other coming by way of tech fall. He pinned I-35’s Michael Upp in the 1st round, followed by a pin of Urbandale’s Ashton Hensley. Doolittle would then tech fall Creston’s Christian Ahrens by a score of 24-9, before pinning ADM’s Jacob Alexander in the final. CJ Hisler went for 3-for-3 in pins on the day en route to the title, winning in order over ADM’s Karver Suton, West Marshall’s Wyatt Weuve and finally I-35’s Eli Green.
Jaxon Cherry was the Lynx lone runner-up at 220 lbs, as he was pinned by I-35 Evan Foreman in the championship match. Cherry had pinned PCM’s Joel Greiner and West Marshall’s Sam Schaper in the previous rounds. Dylan Burnette-Bingham, Austin Mason and Jordan Vankham would all place 4th at 182 lbs, 170 lbs and 152 lbs for the Lynx, while Brayden Henely and Brady Jessen would place 5th at 126 lbs and 160 lbs.
Webster City returns to action on Thursday, where they will wrestle in a tri-dual with Ballard and Class 3A #6 Ankeny at Ballard High School.
