The Roland-Story Norsemen girls basketball team made the trip to the Iowa Great Lakes region on Saturday afternoon, as they took on the Spirit Lake Indians in their season-opener. Saturday is the first known meeting between the two programs on the court.
The game turned out to be a defensive slugfest between the Norsemen and the Indians, with Roland-Story leading 11-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Norsemen extended that lead to 5 at halftime with a 29-24 margin, but the Indians would not go away. A precarious 3-point lead at the end of the 3rd quarter would not bother Roland-Story, as they were able to close out a 49-45 road win.
Roland-Story sophomore Claire Truesdell led the way in the scoring column with 17 points and a team-high 7 rebounds. Senior Madi Bauer would add 12 points off of 4, three-pointers, while sophomore Kamryn Lande added 8 points of her own. Sophomore’s Alyssa Jones and Kate Berggren added 5 points each, off the bench.
Spirit Lake was led by senior Taylor Schneider, who tallied a team-high 11 points, sister’s Claire and Ella Turner added 9 points each, while junior Fran Travis added 7 points.
Roland-Story returns to action on Tuesday, November 28th, when they host Story County-rivals Gilbert at 6 PM at Roland-Story High School.
