The Webster City Lynx football team will wrap-up the regular season on Friday night at Lynx Field, as they host the Monarchs of Denison-Schleswig in Class 4A, District 1 action. The Lynx enter with a record of 5-3 and a district record of 3-1, while the Monarchs enter with a record of 4-4 and 2-2 in district play.
The Monarchs come into Friday fresh off a 28-7 loss at the hands of the Fort Dodge Dodgers in Dodgers Stadium, as they had hoped to build off their upset win over LeMars from the week prior. Nonetheless, the 2022 incarnation of Denison-Schleswig football has taken a big step forward under 2nd-year head coach and former Iowa State All-Big 12 safety Kamari Cotton-Moya. Cotton-Moya’s offense has taken positive steps forward in 2022, with junior quarterback Luke Wiebers throwing for over 850 yards and 5 touchdowns, while rushing for another 223 yards and 4 touchdowns. Running Back Jaxon Hildebrand has provided a physical dimension to Monarch’s rushing attack, with nearly 700 yards and 7 touchdowns on the ground. Wiebers favorite target through the air has been junior receiver Jake Fink, who’s caught 26 passes for 360 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, a solid unit from 2021 has improved by leaps and bounds in 2022. The heart and soul of the Monarch’s defense has been senior linebacker Jordan Von Tersch, who leads the team in total tackles (56.5), solo tackles (45), sacks (4) and tackles for loss (10). Fellow linebackers Gavin Hinpar and Jaxon Hildebrand have also made up the other 2/3rds of a stout core, combining for 53 tackles, 3 sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss. A big question for the Monarchs for this week will be the play of a relatively quiet defensive line against the Lynx single wing attack, and if Denison-Schleswig wants to stun the Lynx on senior night, they will need to control the line of scrimmage.
Kickoff is slated for 7 PM on Friday night from Lynx Field, you can hear play-by-play action on 95.7 KQWC.
