Football Preview: Webster City vs. Storm Lake

The Webster City Lynx football team will be back at Lynx Field on Friday Night as they host the Storm Lake Tornadoes in Class 4A, District 1 action. The Lynx enter Friday with a 4-3 record and 2-1 district record following their 49-40 loss against Spencer, whole Storm Lake enters with an 0-7 record and 0-3 district record following a 50-17 loss to Fort Dodge.

Storm Lake enters Friday still in search of their first win in over 2 years, but have a daunting task in the Lynx at Webster City. The Tornadoes do have a senior-laden skill position group, led by quarterback Joshua Steffen. Steffen has thrown for over 400 yards and 4 touchdowns to 4 interceptions, while also rushing for 100 yards and a touchdown. His favorite target has been senior receiver Brody Boeckman, who’s caught 8 balls for 153 yards and 3 touchdowns this season. Senior running back Julian Cortes-Oropeza has established himself as the Tornadoes rushing threat, with over 300 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Defensively, the secondary has been a strong point for the Tornadoes in 2022, as Storm Lake’s top two tacklers are defensive backs Daniel Ramirez and Brody Boeckman with 31.5 and 29.5 tackles. Junior Joey Rice leads the linebacking core in tackles with 23.5 and 3.5 tackles for loss, while fellow junior Carson Lullmann leads the defensive line in tackles with 14.

Webster City’s defense will look to batten down the hatches after allowing 49 points and nearly 8 yards per play to Spencer on Friday night. The Lynx ground attack will look to run early and often against an inexperienced Storm Lake front.

Kickoff is slated for 7 PM at Lynx Field at Webster City High School on Friday.
