The Webster City Lynx return to the friendly confines of Lynx Field for the first time since mid-September as they host the Spencer Tigers in a very important Class 4A, District 1 tilt. The Lynx enter Friday with a 4-2 record and 2-0 in district play, while the Tigers enter with a 5-1 record and a similar 2-0 district record, and ranked #9 in Class 4A in the latest Radio Iowa poll.
Spencer entered the 2022 season with lowered expectations from those outside the program, following a playoff appearance in 2021 and the graduation of a large senior class. However, the Tigers rebounded from an opening week loss to Spirit Lake and have ripped of 5 wins in a row to run their record to 5-1, including a 49-14 thrashing of Fort Dodge in Spencer last week. The Tigers, led by former Lynx quarterback Jim Tighe, ran for over 350 yards in the win, with a majority of the yards coming from quarterback Riley DeWitt and running back Adrian Carrillo. Carrillo ran for 176 yards, while DeWitt ran for 114 yards, with each player scoring 3 touchdowns a piece. Carrillo is Spencer’s leading rusher with 856 yards and 7 touchdowns, while DeWitt has added nearly another 400 yards and 11 touchdowns. Senior Campbell Wessels is the Tigers leading receiver with 174 yards on 6 receptions.
Defensively, the bell cow for the Tigers is defensive lineman Logan Huckfelt, who has a team-high 28 tackles, with a sack and 5.5 tackles for loss. Fellow defensive lineman Kaleb Cline has racked up 8 tackles with 4 tackles for loss as well. In the back 7, Adrian Carrillo has benefitted from the stout defensive line with 19.5 tackles, with 3 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss. The big playmaker in the defensive backfield has been Eli Hookfin, who has 2 tackles for loss, an interception and a fumble recovery that was returned for a touchdown. The test for the Spencer defense will be the physicality of the Lynx offensive line and running back Jaxon Cherry, who is coming of a career-high 332-yard performance against LeMars in Week 6.
