Following a Week 5 that saw many outstanding performances running the football in the KQ-area, it was going to be hard to top the numbers that were put up. Week 6 didn’t quite reach that mark, but it did not disappoint in any fashion when it came to individual performances.
Webster City – RB Jaxon Cherry
For the 2nd week in a row, Jaxon Cherry ran over, around and through the opposition, rushing for a career-high 332 yards and 4 touchdowns on 28 carries in Webster City’s 28-7 win over LeMars. Cherry’s 332-yard performance was the first 300-yard performance by a Lynx running back since Trey Mathis ran for 306 yards in a 27-21 win over Humboldt on October 11th, 2019. Cherry also tallied 6.5 tackles and a tackle for loss on Friday.
South Hamilton – RB Nick Seversieke/RB Landon Skartvedt
South Hamilton saw a watershed 62-8 thrashing of South Central Calhoun, where the Hawks ran for 500 yards against the Titans. It was the first time a team had ran for 500+ yards against South Central Calhoun since Madrid ran for 518 yards on October 10th, 2014.
The Hawks had two 100-yard rushers, the top being senior running back Landon Skartvedt, who carried the ball just 11 times for 127 yards and 2 touchdowns, including a 65-yard touchdown run on a botched punt attempt due to a low snap. Skartvedt also had an interception with a 51-yard return.
The other South Hamilton running back that surpassed 100 yards was sophomore Nick Severseike. Severseike carried the ball 7 times for 121 yard and 3 touchdowns, averaging 17.3 yards per carry against the Titans.
Eagle Grove – RB Orlando Hernandez
Eagle Grove picked up a 48-14 homecoming win over Manson-Northwest Webster on Thursday night, and did so with a big night on the ground. Junior running back Orlando Hernandez led the charge for the Eagles with 237 yards and 4 touchdowns in his 2nd game back in the lineup for Logan Willard’s squad. Hernandez also recorded an interception in the game.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows – QB Preston Gardner/RB Nevan Foss
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows picked up a huge 24-8 win over defending Class 2A State Champions Southeast Valley on Friday night, that likely solidified the Cowboys as playoff qualifier in Class 2A.
The CGD backfield of quarterback Preston Gardner and running back Nevan Foss carried the load offensively for the Cowboys. Gardner ran for 139 yards and 2 touchdowns, including a 72-yard run that got the Cowboys on the board initially. Nevan Foss ran for 134 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, with the lone touchdown giving the Cowboys a lead in which they never looked back.
Roland-Story – RB Jonovan Wilkinson/DE/P Luke Patton
Roland-Story remained undefeated in Class 2A, District 7 with a 43-29 win over Iowa-Falls Alden, where the Norsemen ground attack shined once again. Roland-Story RB Jonovan Wilkinson surpassed 200 yards rushing for the 2nd game in a row, rushing for 219 yards and 3 touchdowns, including an 80-yard run late in the 3rd quarter.
Defensive end and punter Luke Patton had timely plays in crunch time as well, while amassing 3.5 tackles, but a 74-yard interception return for a touchdown was the back-breaker in IF-A’s upset hopes. Patton also played a big role in field position, averaging 41.4 yards per punt on 4 punts.
