Clarion-Goldfield-Dows upends Pocahontas Area on homecoming, 17-8

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys returned to the friendly confines of CGD Middle School on Friday night, to host the Indians of Pocahontas Area in Class 2A, District 2 action. The Cowboys entered Friday with a 3-1 record, 0-1 in district play, while the Indians entered with a similar 3-1 overall record, and 0-1 district record.

The Cowboys defense forced a punt on it’s first possession, before the CGD offense eased down the field for a drive capped off by a 9-yard touchdown run by Nevan Foss to put the Cowboys up 7-0. The ensuing Indians possession concluded with a shanked punt that set up the Cowboys will good field position, and was capped off by a 32-yard field goal from Brallon Gomez to make the score 10-0.

Pocahontas Area would answer late in the 2nd quarter, taking advantage of a short field after a shanked CGD punt, scoring on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Lucas Kopriva to Gabe Ehn to bring the halftime score to 10-8. CGD would fire the decisive shot on the opening drive of the 2nd half, with running back Nevan Foss ripping off a 59-yard touchdown run to make the score 17-8. Defense and special teams held serve for the Cowboys to hold on to the 17-8 victory.

Nevan Foss was the Jewell Market Player of the Game, with 14 carries for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns. CGD improves to 4-1 on the season and 1-1 in the district, with a key showdown Friday at Southeast Valley.
