The Webster City Lynx softball team made the trip down to Boone County on Saturday to compete in the annual Bob Morgan Classic softball tournament at Ogden High School. The Lynx were joined by the host Bulldogs, Boone, Carroll, Carroll Kuemper, Des Moines Christian, Gilbert, Greene County and Southeast Valley.
Webster City opened their Saturday against the Southeast Valley Jaguars, in what was the first game of the season for the Lynx due to weather prohibiting games during the previous week. Southeast Valley would plate a run each in the first and second to hold a 2-0 lead over Webster City. The Lynx bats would come alive in the 3rd, as Webster City scratched a run across in the 3rd and 4th to knot it at 2, before the Lynx blew the door open with a 4-run 5th to take a 6-2 lead. An insurance run in the 7th gave Webster City a 7-2 win, as Kelly Stoakes belted her first home run of the season, while Bonnie Nohrenberg, Delainey Bargfrede, Trinity Griffith and Ava Petersen contributed RBIs. Bargfriede struck out 15 batters in the game as well.
Game two pitted the Lynx against the Carroll Tigers, as Webster City looked to make it a 2-0 start to the young season. The Lynx picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the 1st, following a Carroll run in the top of the frame to hold a 2-1 lead. The Tigers would score again in the 2nd and 3rd, but the Lynx would plate a run in the bottom of the 3rd to tie the score at 3. Offenses would be silent in the 4th and 5th, until Carroll plated a run in the top of the 6th to lead 4-3 and hold on to win by that margin. Delainey Bargfrede and Alayna Finucan plated RBIs for the Lynx, while Kelly Stoakes struckout 3 in her complete game performance.
The final game of the day for the Lynx saw them face off with Carroll Kuemper, where the Knights were able to plate a run in the top of the 1st and held a 1-0 lead for a majority of the contest. That was until Webster City plated 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th off a Delainey Bargfrede RBI single and runs scored from Alayna Finucan and Sierra Steuerwald to put the Lynx up 3-1. Delainey Bargfrede entered in relief of Kelly Stoakes, and sealed the win by striking out 8 Knight batters and only allowing 1-hit in the 3-1 win.
Webster City will host Storm Lake on Tuesday night with first pitch slated for 7:30 PM at Webster City High School.
