The Webster City Lynx baseball team made the trip north on Saturday, to compete in the annual Algona Bishop Garrigan baseball tournament at Bishop Garrigan High School. The Lynx were joined by the host Golden Bears and Remsen-St. Marys.
The Lynx’s first game of the day came against the hosts in the Golden Bears, who entered with a 1-0 record, following a season opening 10-8 win over cross-town rival Algona High. Webster City got off and running quickly, as they’ve done all year, with 3 runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Webster City would then add two more runs in the 2nd and the 3rd off starting pitcher Garrett Heying to take a 7-0 lead. The Golden Bears would get a run back off a Hollis Bode RBI to cut it to 7-1, as new pitcher Nathan Merron would pitch 4 1/3 strong innings in relief, as the Lynx picked up a run in 7th to win the game 8-1.
Webster City would then matchup with a perennial Class 1A power in the Hawks of Remsen-St. Mary’s. The game was a pitchers duel for 4 1/2 innings, with the Hawks scratching two runs across with 1 in the 1st and another in the 3rd, and the Lynx scoring off a Keegan Hisler RBI to make it 2-1, before the Hawks blew the game open in the bottom of the 5th. Ty McKinney entered in relief of starter Devon Stoakes, and Remsen-St. Mary’s jumped at the sight of a new arm, scoring 6 in the 5th and another run in the 6th to make it 9-1. Webster City was unable to garner any more runs in the 9-1 loss.
The Lynx return to action on Monday when they host Carroll Keumper at Webster City High School at 7:30 PM.
