State Track and Field Day 1 Recap

KQ-Area athletes descended upon Drake Stadium in Des Moines on Thursday afternoon, for Day 1 of the Iowa High School Track and Field Championships. All KQ-area teams are competing in the Class 2A/3A sessions.

The first finished event to include a KQ athlete was the 2A girls shot put, where Roland-Story’s Macy Friest placed 14th with a best throw 34′ 9.75″. Other field events that led off the afternoon session included the boys long jump, where Roland-Story’s Will Bunn would place 5th with a mark of 22′ .75″, a new lifetime best. Teammate Nate Johnson placed 12th with a high mark of 20′ 4″. In the girls long jump, Roland-Story’s Adalyn Sporleder placed 4th with a jump of 17′ 3.5″, a new PR, Eagle Grove’s Addyson Jeske placed 22nd with a mark of 14′ 11.75″. In the Class 2A boys shot put, Austin Busch found himself in a battle with Jesup’s Carson Lienau, as Busch wound up 1 inch short of a state title, throwing 58′ 8.5″, as Lienau won with a throw of 58′ 9.5″. In the 3A boys discus, Webster City’s JJ Moore placed 24th with a throw of 101′ 7″.

The individual events started with the 2A girls 3000 meter run, where Roland-Story’s Claire Truesdell placed 17th in a time of 11:59.23. In the 2A girls 200 meter dash, South Hamilton’s Kelbe Krumm placed 20th in the 200 meter dash in a time 27.62. Eagle Grove’s Blake Walker and Roland-Story’s Eli Thorson followed up in the 2A boys 200 meter dash, with Thorson placing 14th in a mark of 23.31, while Walker was 18th in a time of 23.40. Moving to the 2A girls 100 meter preliminaries, South Hamilton’s Kate Barkema placed 15th overall in a time of 13.36, while Eagle Grove’s Ayden Feske placed 19th in a time of 13.36. In the 2A boys 100 meter dash, Roland-Story’s Eli Thorson tied for 18th in a time of 11.72 with West Sioux’s Carter Bultman. The 400’s saw South Hamilton’s Ashlyn Erickson place 9th in 1:01.13 in 2A, a new PR for her, as Roland-Story’s Kale Lande placed 5th in the boys 2A race, in a time of 50.37, a new lifetime best.

In the relays, South Hamilton’s girls had the first crack for area schools, as they competed in the 2A 4×800, and placed 21st in a time of 10:42.00 with the quartet of Anna Lammers-McKenna Miller-Kailyn Northrop-Madison Beaune. Roland-Story’s boys then took their shot at the 4×800, placing 9th in a time of 8:26.71, a new school-record. Finally, the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowgirls shuttle hurdle relay appeared to qualify for the finals on Saturday, but were later DQ’d.

Action for KQ-radio teams resume tomorrow with field events at 2 PM with South Hamilton’s Mackenzy Grady competing in the 2A Girls Discus and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’s Nevan Foss in the 2A Boys High Jump.
