The South Hamilton and Roland-Story boys track teams returned to the oval on Thursday night and competed in the annual South Hamilton Hawk Relays at South Hamilton High School in Jewell. Teams joining the Hawks and Norsemen included Des Moines Christian, Baxter, West Hancock, St. Edmond, Hampton-Dumont-CAL, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura, North Butler and North Polk.
Field events kicked off the day as it was another clean sweep for Austin Busch, winning the shot put with a throw of 59′ 9″, and the discus with a throw of 161′ 0.5″. Carter Balvanz would place 5th in the shot put with a throw of 41′ 9″, while Roland-Story’s Patrick Gonzales placed 4th with a PR of 42′ 4.5″. Roland-Story also won the long jump with freshman Sam Knoll, with a mark of 19′ even, Nick Butler placed 4th for the Norsemen, while Landon Grove placed 6th for South Hamilton.
In individual events, there were two area champions, as R-S’s Kale Lande won the 400 meter dash in a time of 52.23, while South Hamilton’s Tanner Blue won the 110 high hurdles in a time of 15.41 seconds. The Norsemen’s Nate Johnson placed 2nd in the 100 meter dash in a time of 11.43, while Eli Thorson was 4th in a time of 11.49. Will Bunn placed 2nd in the 200 meter dash in a time of 23.87.
In distance events, South Hamilton got a 3rd place finish in the 800 from Nicholas Severseike in a mark of 2:12.40, while R-S’s Ben Greenfield placed 4th in a time of 2:12.64. The Norsemen would get a 2nd place finish from Nate Limas in the 3200 meter run in a time of 10:38.96, as well as a 3rd place finish in the 1600 meter run in a time of 5:00.55. R-S would also get a 3rd place finish from Quin Ante in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:01.42.
In the relays, Roland-Story would sweep all 3 sprint relays, winning the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400. South Hamilton would place 8th in the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400. The Norsemen would also win the Sprint Medley in a time of 1:36.22, while finishing 3rd in the distance medley and 4th in the shuttle hurdle relay.
Roland-Story would win the meet with a total 142 points, while South Hamilton placed 6th with 65 points.
