The 2021-22 high school basketball season was a highly-successful season for our KQ-area teams. The 5 teams combined for 2 conference championships, 57 wins, and 1 state tournament appearance as Roland-Story reached the Class 2A State Tournament for the first time since 2012. The following teams are first-team all-area honorees, followed by second-team all-area honorees, and third-team all-area honorees.
First Team
G: Isaiah Naylor (Roland-Story), Junior
Stats: 17.1 PPG/1.6 RPG/2.2 APG/1.6 SPG/46.2% FG/39.8% 3PT/83% FT
Naylor saw a massive leap in production from his sophomore year to his junior, seeing his scoring average go from 4.9 PPG to 17.1 PPG, over a 12-point increase. Directing the Norsemen to their first state tournament in a decade, Naylor shared point guard duties with sophomore Jonovan Wilkinson and led a Norsemen offense that finished 12th in Class 2A in scoring, averaging 65 PPG.
G: Jamie Grossoehme (Webster City), Junior
Stats: 14.3 PPG/2.2 RPG/1.9 APG/48.2% FG/47.9% 3PT/50% FT
Grossoehme stepped into a varsity role for the Lynx as a junior, and became one of the most prolific 3-point shooters in the entire state in 2021-22. Grossoehme held the 5th-highest three-point shooting percentage in the state all classes with a minimum of 100 three-pointers shot, sitting at 47.9%. His hot shooting helped carry the Lynx early in the season as the team struggled in other areas on offense.
G: Jonovan Wilkinson (Roland-Story), Sophomore
Stats: 14.2 PPG/6.5 RPG/3.4 APG/1.6 SPG/49.6% FG/33.9% 3PT/79.2% FT
Wilkinson was the other half of the two-guard combo that led the Norsemen to their first state tournament in a decade. The sophomore was 2nd on the team in scoring, and was the 2nd-leading rebounder on the team, as well as the Norsemen’s leading assist man. While Isaiah Naylor was proficient from the perimeter, Wilkinson was able to drive the lane at will.
F: Jamin Stuhr (Webster City), Senior
Stats: 11.3 PPG/7.1 RPG/0.9 APG/0.8 SPG/60.9% FG/30.8% 3PT/64% FT
Undersized compared to his fellow big men in the North Central Conference, Jamin Stuhr made up for his lack of height with sheer athleticism, using speed and quickness to make himself a double-digit scorer for Webster City. Stuhr saved some of his best performances for the late-season run, including a 22-point outing against Algona, and 17 points in the Lynx district loss to Waverly-Shell Rock.
F: Connor State (Clarion-Goldfield-Dows), Senior
Stats: 15.2 PPG/7.3 RPG/2.6 APG/1.4 SPG/1.1 BPG/53.8% FG/55.1% FT
One of the premier players in the North Central Conference in 2021-22, Connor State led Clarion-Goldfield-Dows to a share of their first conference title since 1962. The senior led the team in points and rebounding, with 15.2 PPG and 7.3 RPG, and proved to be an excellent passer out of the low block, averaging over 2.5 APG.
Second Team
G: Jaxon Carpenter (Clarion-Goldfield-Dows), Senior
Stats: 11.7 PPG/5.1 RPG/3.5 APG/2.7 SPG/51.8% FG/28.0% 3PT/50% FT
Carpenter was one of the top defensive players in the North Central Conference this season, showcasing himself as one of the top rebounding guards in the conference, as well as ball hawk in the passing lane. Carpenter was a key cog in the Cowboys first conference title in 60 years.
G: Ty McKinney (Webster City), Junior
Stats: 12.5 PPG/4.1 RPG/3 APG/1.5 SPG/43.9% FG/30.7% 3PT/62.7% FT
A slow start to the season hampered McKinney’s numbers, but the junior point guard began taking over games by season’s end. McKinney’s dominant 23-point performance against Humboldt led the Lynx to a signature win over the then-#2 Wildcats, costing them an outright conference championship.
G: Coady Olson (Clarion-Goldfield-Dows), Senior
Stats: 9.4 PPG/2.2 RPG/1.4 APG/41% FG/28% 3PT/65.8% FT
Olson became known to the North Central Conference for his miracle 3-pointer to beat Iowa Falls-Alden and keep the Cowboys conference title hopes alive, but the senior guard became a confident scorer by season’s end and was given the ball in many late-game scenarios to give CGD chances to tie or win.
F: Drake Canavan (Eagle Grove), Sophomore
Stats: 12.4 PPG/6.4 RPG/1.3 APG/1.4 SPG/40.6% FG/37.9% 3PT/71.1% FT
Canavan built off a promising freshman campaign and became Eagle Grove’s go-to guy for the 2021-22 season. A year in which they only picked up 2 wins, Canavan kept the Eagles in many contests throughout the season. 12.4 PPG and 6.4 RPG were enough to lead the team, and showcased a consistent stroke from the perimeter, shooting nearly 38% from three.
F: Luke Patton (Roland-Story), Junior
Stats: 10.7 PPG/10.9 RPG/1.4 APG/1 SPG/1.6 BPG/50.7% FG/28.8% 3PT/65.9% FT
Patton was a double-double machine for Roland-Story in their state tournament season. The Junior showcased an ability to not only be dominant on the low-block on both ends, but to add range to his game, shooting close to 30% on the season from three.
Third Team
G: Landon Skartvedt (South Hamilton), Junior
Stats: 7.3 PPG/3.9 RPG/1.9 APG/0.9 SPG/27.8% FG/25.9% 3PT/61% FT
