Clarion-Goldfield-Dows loses heartbreaker to Garner-Hayfield-Ventura in district final

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows basketball team made the trip north on Tuesday night, to face off with the Cardinals of Garner-Hayfield-Ventura at Clear Lake High School for the Class 2A, District 6 Championship game. The Cardinals entered Tuesday night with a 17-6 record.

The game was a true back-and-forth affair for all 32 minutes. The Cowboys led 10-8 at the end of the first, and managed to hold on to that two-point lead at halftime, with a 20-18 lead. Garner-Hayfield-Ventura began to get more shots to fall in the 2nd half, and led 29-28 going into the 4th quarter. In the fourth, both sides traded big shot after big shot. A missed shot with 20 seconds to go by CGD gave GHV two free throws, but managed to only knock down one, giving the Cardinals a two-point lead. The Cowboys got the final possession, which resulted in Coady Olson making a man miss at the 3-point line and going up for an open shot as the clock expired, and the shot bounced up and off giving Garner-Hayfield-Ventura a 43-41 win.

With the win, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura advances to the Class 2A, Substate 3 final, where they will face the Roland-Story Norsemen at Fort Dodge High School. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows dream season ends at 19-4.
