Webster City Police investigating another community scam.

The Webster City Police Department has been alerted to yet another scam targeting citizens. The latest is the utility company scam. In these incidents, someone claiming to represent the local utility company (electric, gas, water, etc.) states that unless an outstanding bill is paid immediately, the services will be cut to your residence or place of business. Sometimes the caller will request personal banking information or ask that a wire transfer or reloadable gift card be used to pay the delinquent bill.
Please take notice that your utility providers (City of Webster City, Black Hills Energy, etc.) DO NOT conduct business in this manner! If you receive one of these calls, remember these tips:
1. Hang up and call the utility company yourself.
2. NEVER wire or pay with a reloadable card, gift card or cryptocurrency to anyone who demands it.
If there is ever any doubt, contact your provider and local law enforcement agency. Some numbers to keep handy include:
· Webster City Municipal Utilities, (515) 832-9141
· Black Hills Energy, (888) 890-5554
· Webster City Police Department, (515) 832-9166
· Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, (515) 832-9500
Make sure your family and friends are aware of this scam and remain vigilant, together we can make it rough on these people preying on our citizens.
