The Webster City Lynx basketball teams returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted a doubleheader with girls hosting the Perry Jayettes in their regular season finale, and the boys hosting Class 3A #2 Humboldt in their senior night. The Jayettes entered with an 8-12 record, while the #2 Wildcats entered at 17-1.
The girls began the night with a dominating defensive performance, leading 7-0 after the first quarter and 20-1 at halftime. The Jayettes would not score their first field goal until the 3rd quarter. Perry’s offense would come alive in the second half, outscoring the Lynx 24-13, but the deficit was too great as Webster City held on for a 33-25 victory. Livia Kasch finished the night with 14 points and 11 rebounds as the Lynx improved to 6-15.
The boys game followed with Webster City looking to crush the hopes of Humboldt’s dream of an outright North Central Conference title, especially following a 2-point loss to the Wildcats in Humboldt earlier in the season. Both sides traded blows in the first half, with Humboldt leading 15-12 after the first quarter, narrows to 28-26 at halftime. The Wildcats would lead by as much as 10 at one point in the second half, before the Lynx stormed back in the 4th quarter. Ty McKinney began willing the Lynx in crunch time, and two late trips to the foul line gave Webster City a 54-51 lead. Humboldt would hit a prayer three by Will Orness, but the shot was waved off due to a timeout called by the Humboldt bench. The Wildcats final look was airballed and Lynx students stormed the floor to celebrate a win over the #2 team in Class 3A.
The Webster City boys return to action on Tuesday as they host Algona in their conference finale, the Webster City girls open Class 4A regional action at Boone on Wednesday against the Toreadors.
