Webster City wrestling duals season ends in Osage

The Webster City Lynx wrestling squad made the long trek north and east on Tuesday night, to compete in their Class 2A Regional dual with the West Marshall Trojans and the Osage Green Devils at Osage High School. With a pair of wins, the Lynx would advance to next Wednesday’s dual state tournament in Des Moines.

The Lynx would face off with West Marshall first, who won their Class 2A Sectional on Saturday. The match began fast for the Trojans, who picked up a pair of pins and a major decision with the match starting at 132. Webster City would slow the bleeding with a Jordan Vankham major decision and a Brady Jessen fall to cut the score to 16-10. West Marshall would answer with an Austin Pfantz fall at 170, before Evan Estlund picked up a fall over Graham Nason at 182. Following a West Marshall fall at 195, CJ Hisler picked up a 6-3 decision at 220, before Jaxon Cherry picked up a 46-second fall at 285. Shane Hanford would pick up a fall at 106, before Webster City reeled off wins in the final 3 matches to take a 40-34 win.

Webster City would then been met with the challenge of 2A #3 Osage. The Green Devils possessed 8 ranked wrestlers, and were even without 2A #4 at 160 in Nick Fox due to illness. The match began at 138, where Nolan Heard picked up a tech fall over Luke Estlund. Two more Osage wins put the Green Devils in front 17-0, before Webster City picked up a fall and major decision from Brady Jessen and Evan Estlund. However, the avalanche began from there on out, with Osage reeling off 6 straight wins to take a 41-10 lead and clinch the dual. Webster City would pick up falls from Carson Doolittle and Cam Phetxoumphone, but it was too little, too late as Osage advanced to state with a 53-21 win.

Webster City ends its dual season 19-7, and their remaining wrestlers will compete at Saturday’s Class 2A, District 7 Tournament at Webster City High School.
