Clarion-Goldfield-Dows basketball teams made the trip east on Highway 3 on Tuesday night, to face off with the Bulldogs of Hampton-Dumont-CAL in their North Central Conference finale. The HD-CAL girls entered at 14-6, while the HD-CAL boys entered at 9-10.
The girls game got off to a quick start for both sides, with CGD only trailing 17-15 after the first quarter. However, HD-CAL battened down the hatches defensively, holding the Cowgirls to just 2 points in the 2nd quarter, and taking a commanding 38-17 halftime lead. The Bulldogs would continue to stifle the Cowgirls on the defensive end in the 2nd half, as they picked up a dominant 58-28 win.
The boys game followed as Clarion-Goldfield-Dows looked to finish their conference season with two-losses and a off-chance they could still pick up a share of the conference title. The game was a tight battle through the first half, with the game tied at 33 at half time. But the Cowboys kicked it up a few notches in the 2nd half, outscoring the Bulldogs 35-14 in the 2nd half in a 68-47 win. Connor State led CGD with 19, while Aiden Harrington and Jaxon Carpenter finished with 13.
The CGD boys return to action on Thursday, when they travel to Gowrie to face Southeast Valley. The CGD girls are back in action on Saturday, when they travel to Estherville to face off with Estherville-Lincoln Central in the first round of their Class 3A Region.
