The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows basketball teams hosted their biggest doubleheader of the season, as they welcomed in the Humboldt Wildcats on Friday night. The Humboldt girls entered with a 10-9 record, while the Humboldt boys entered with a 15-1 record, ranked #3 in Class 3A.
The girls game was a closer battle than it was the first time around, with Humboldt leading 11-4 after the first quarter, making that lead 27-15 at halftime. The Cowgirls would not go down without a fight as the two sides traded buckets in the 3rd quarter. However, the Wildcats would dominate the 4th defensively, en route to a 53-34 win. Morgan Mann led Humboldt with 18 points, while Lexie Lane finished with a game-high 23 points.
The boys game followed in the only meeting of one-loss teams in the state on Friday night. Humboldt at 15-1, and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows at 16-1. The game got out to a fast start, with Humboldt leading 23-19 after the first, but began to slow down in the 2nd as the Wildcats held a 35-33 halftime lead. The 3rd quarter started off hot for the Cowboys, as they scored the first 12 points of the period to take a 45-35 lead, before the Wildcats cut it back to 45-43 by the end of the 3rd. Both sides traded buckets and free throws in the 4th, and a score of 55-all sent it to overtime. Even then, Humboldt was not able to pull it out until the final minute of the frame, for a 68-62 win. Will Orness finished with 22 for the Wildcats, as Connor State has had 22 for the Cowboys.
The CGD boys return to action on Monday night as they host Manson-Northwest Webster. The CGD girls return to action on Tuesday night, when they host Hampton-Dumont-CAL.
