The South Hamilton Hawks basketball teams were back on the road on Friday night, as they traveled to Nevada to take on the Cubs in Heart of Iowa Conference action. The Cubs girls were 9-9, while the Cubs boys were 10-5.
The girls game was a tight one from the get go, as South Hamilton kept pace with the Cubs without leading scorer Makena Galetich. Hallee Feaker led the charge in her absence, as the Hawks only trailed 20-19 at halftime. Strong defense and key buckets continued to dominate the game in the 2nd half as South Hamilton led 31-29 after the 3rd quarter, setting the stage for an exciting finish. With 10 seconds left, senior Mackenzy Grady banked in an elbow jumper to tie the game at 40. The good feelings were short-lived, as Alex Arnaud missed a runner at the other end, but Shelbi Hazlitt’s putback as time expired gave Nevada a 42-40 win.
The boys game followed, and appeared to be a rout from the start, as Nevada jumped out to a 16-6 lead after the first. The lead only continued to grow, as the Cubs were led by hot shooting from behind the arc, and led 34-17 at halftime. Nevada continued to pour it on in the 2nd half, outscoring the Hawks 40-13 in the 2nd half as they scored a blowout, 74-30 win over South Hamilton. Jacob Khounsourath led the way with 22 points for the Cubs.
South Hamilton returns to action on Tuesday, when they host rival Roland-Story in Heart of Iowa action.
