The Webster City wrestling squad made the trip west on Saturday morning, to compete in the annual North Central Conference wrestling tournament. This year’s edition was held at St. Edmond High School in For Dodge, where the Lynx were joined by the 7 other members of the conference.
The Lynx claimed 5 conference champions on Saturday. The highlight came courtesy of senior Cam Phetxoumphone, as the dominant force at 120 pounds became the 11th athlete in NCC history to claim 4 conference titles with his pin of Humboldt’s DJ Muir. Carson Doolittle claimed his 2nd conference crown to start his high school career at 113, with a 4-0 decision over Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s Jack Showalter.
Austin Mason then claimed his first conference title, taking home first at 145 with a 5-0 decision over Humboldt’s Ty Gargano, as Mason stands at 21-7 on the season. CJ Hisler then picked up his 2nd conference title at 195, while Jaxon Cherry picked up his first conference title at 220 pounds. Evan Estlund was the lone 2nd place finisher for the Lynx at 170 pounds, falling to HD-CAL’s Tate Schmitt in a 1-0 decision in the title match.
Brady Jessen and Landon Griffin picked up 3rd place finishes at 160 and 285, while Addison Scott, Luke Estlund and Jordan Vankham finished 4th at 106, 138 and 152. Tristan Mason and Dylan Burnette-Bingham finished 6th at 126 and 182, respectively. In the end, the Lynx fell one point short of the team title, as a Cole Freerks 1-0 decision at the 220 3rd place match gave Hampton-Dumont-CAL the team title.
Webster City wrestling returns to action on Thursday night, as they travel to Carroll to compete in a triangular with the Carroll Tigers and Boone Toreadors.
